Fact: Most surfers on one wave

Some of you urban dwellers might think that the most surfers ever on one wave was down at your local the last time the swell looked clean – but you’re (probably) wrong. I know Manly beach in Sydney last weekend looked a promising candidate for this award.

Trestles, Snapper on the Gold Coast, Hawaii’s north shore, beachies across France, Brazil, South Africa and anywhere good waves greet high-density populations all host line-ups that have often passed the point of critical mass. This results in localism, surf rage, temper tantrums and general whinging. But it also helps fuel the burgeoning surf travel market so you can go somewhere tropical to deal with aggro Brazilian and kamikaze Japanese travelling surfers instead. :)

But on a happy note, the most people to ever surf on one wave happened in good spirits at the Earthwave beach festival in Muizenberg, Cape Town on October 04, 2009. Legendary South African surfer and festival founder Paul Botha said, “We estimated that there were more than 120 surfers on the fifth of the seven waves surfed at Muizenberg during Earthwave.”

Now that is quite a fact about surfing.

One way to scare off the Great Whites.
